CHM participates in the European LIFE Ceramic Sustainable Urban Drainage System research project

CHM participates in the European research project LIFE Ceramic Sustainable Urban Drainage System, The project aims to improve the cities’ ability to adapt to climate change and promote the use of green infrastructure in their urban planning plans through the development and implementation of a demonstrator in the city. It is an urban drainage system that produces low carbon emissions and aims to rehabilitate urban areas.

The development of this project consists of a permeable surface whose skin is formed by an innovative system based on the use of ceramic tiles in stock, with low commercial value. This system can reduce surface runoff water by almost 90% and reuse it for irrigation, in addition to reducing diffuse pollution and improving the quality of the waters compared to other traditional systems. Moreover, with its use, the removal of pollutants can reach more than 70% in hydrocarbons, more than 50% in phosphorus, more than 65% in nitrogen and more than 60% in heavy metals, in addition to achieving a substantial reduction in CO2 emissions.

In addition to CHM, the LIFE project also involves: Valencian Polytechnic University (UPV), the City Council of Benicàssim (the municipality that will host the demonstrator), the Centro Ceramico di Bologna (CCB-Italia), the Technological Center of Ceramics and Glass (CTCV-Portugal) and the company Trencadís de Sempre, S.L., all of which are under the coordination of the ITC.

The duration of the project is planned until the end of September 2019 and has a total budget of €1,817,972, co-financed, at 60%, by the European Commission through the LIFE Program for Environmental Policy and Governance.
