Today, the execution work for the project's demonstrator has been completed. Life Heartland, and it is now fully open to traffic. This work includes the installation of a novel reflective pavement, which aims to achieve a decrease in surface temperature of 8-10ºC and an ambient temperature of around 1.5ºC, compared to a conventional surface. It also aims to reduce energy consumption related to public lighting and nearby cooling systems, as well as reduce the amount of pollutants in the atmosphere and study the possible reduction in noise levels after the change.

This intervention in the city of Murcia aims to break down urban engineering barriers and seek new concepts that improve the efficiency of urban elements, such as the paved surfaces of any municipality, and optimize the performance of nearby facilities.

With the study following the implementation of this new pavement and the quantification of the planned improvements, the aim is to take a step towards the 2030 urban transition, in line with the climate and energy measures of the European Union's climate action, and to achieve sustainable cities where the effects of increasingly visible climate change are mitigated, improving the quality of life and well-being of citizens.
