Methodology-5S

At CHM, our mission has always been to offer infrastructure construction services with the highest quality, efficiency, and safety. To achieve this goal, we constantly seek to implement and perfect methodologies that allow us to optimize our processes. One of the most effective tools we have adopted is the Lean methodology, specifically the 5S method.

What is the 5S Methodology?

The 5S methodology is a Japanese practice developed to establish and maintain an orderly, clean, and safe work environment. The 5S represent five basic principles that, when applied correctly, can radically transform any workplace. The five terms that make up this methodology are:

  1. Classification Separate the necessary items from the unnecessary ones and eliminate the latter. This first step helps free up space and reduce clutter, allowing for a more efficient work environment.
  2. Seiton (Order): Organize the necessary items so they are easy to find and use. The idea is that each thing has its place and each place has its thing, thus facilitating quick access to tools and materials.
  3. Cleaning (Cleaning): Maintain the workspace clean and in optimal condition. Regular cleaning not only improves the appearance of the environment but also contributes to the early detection of potential problems and equipment failures.
  4. Seiketsu (Standardization): Establish standards and procedures for maintaining the first three S's. Standardization is crucial to ensure that the processes of sorting, straightening, and cleaning become sustainable long-term habits.
  5. Discipline Foster self-discipline and commitment to 5S practices. Discipline ensures that all team members follow established rules, allowing the benefits of 5S to be sustained over time.

Implementation of 5S at CHM

At CHM, we have enthusiastically and determinedly adopted the 5S methodology. Initially, we implemented this method in our operations conservation of highways. The results have been so positive that we have decided to expand the implementation of 5S to other services and areas of the company.

Positive Results in Road Maintenance

The implementation of 5S in our road maintenance activities has led to a series of significant improvements:

  • Increased Productivity Workplace organization and order have reduced wasted time searching for tools and materials, which has increased operational efficiency.
  • Security Improvement A clean and organized environment minimizes accident risks, thereby protecting our workers and ensuring a safer work environment.
  • Enhanced Quality By keeping equipment and tools in good condition and accessible, the quality of work performed on the roads has improved.
  • Staff Motivation The 5S methodology fosters a positive work environment, which has increased employee morale and engagement.

Expanding the 5S to Other Services

Given the proven effectiveness of 5S in conservation of highways, we are in the process of extending this methodology to Other services that we have awarded. This includes various areas of infrastructure construction, where we are sure that 5S will contribute to improving productivity and safety, just as they have done in our conservation operations.
