- The LIFE CERSUDS project has been awarded the iF DESIGN AWARD, an internationally recognized award as a seal of design excellence, through the application submitted by ITC-AICE.
The award has been granted to the LIFE CERSUDS project, a Sustainable Urban Drainage System that utilizes low commercial value, though high-quality, ceramic. It won in the “Product” discipline and the category: “1.19 Public / Retail.” LIFE CERSUDS was funded by the European Union's LIFE 2014-2020 Programme for Environment and Climate Action under reference LIFE15 CCA/ES/000091 and with the support of the Valencian Institute for Business Competitiveness (IVACE) of the Valencian Regional Government. The project participants have been the Ceramics Technology Institute (ITC-AICE), the Research Institute of Water and Environmental Engineering of the Polytechnic University of Valencia (IIAMA – UPV), the Benicàssim City Council, and the construction company CHM Works and Infrastructures, the company Trencadis de Sempre, the Bologna Ceramics Center in Italy (CCB), and the Ceramics and Glass Technology Center of Portugal (CTCV).
Each year, the world's oldest independent design organization, the iF International Forum Design GmbH, based in Hannover, organizes the competition for iF Design Award.
LIFE CERSEUDS has been chosen by a jury composed of 98 leading experts in the field of design from over 20 countries, recognized for being an example of innovation through the use of ceramics in an urban space. Specifically, the system uses permeable ceramic paving installed on Torre de Sant Vicent street in Benicàssim (Castellón) and has managed over 30 rain events that have helped regenerate aquifers. The water reintegrated into the aquifer has been filtered, with virtually all pollutants removed. It is therefore an example of urban resilience in the face of climate change, as well as an example of a circular economy by valuing ceramic material that was in stock and not in use. The competition in this edition was “very fierce,” according to the organization, as nearly 10,000 projects from 52 countries competed to achieve the coveted distinction and seal of design excellence.
